La Academia

La Academia, the independent high school of Denver Inner City Parish, has been positively changing the lives of young people since 1971.  Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, but nearly all come from schools where they felt unconnected. At La Academia, we connect with students by combining the acquisition of knowledge with the development of basic life skills, a personal code of ethics, a commitment to being positive participants in our community, and creating a nurturing, family-like environment.

Our mission is to develop and empower students in a caring, rigorous, and transformative environment.

  • Small class sizes provide students with the individual attention they need, whether that means being challenged to push themselves or feeling supported while navigating difficult circumstances. Our teacher-to-student ratio is 1:8.
  • Student travel allows students to explore the world and experience difference cultures. Our students have travelled all over the world, including to Mexico, China, and Europe.
  • Credit Recovery Program provides self-paced courses so students can catch up on missed or failed courses and graduate on time. La Academia faculty work with students to create a recovery plan and schedule of course work to be completed in order to graduate.  Routine progress meetings and faculty support ensure academic integrity and successful graduation.
  • Social Justice Emphasis gives context to current issues and creates a supportive atmosphere where students are encouraged to be socially conscious and active. We stand in solidarity with our students and community in the face of injustice.
  • Passionate Educators teach all grade levels and invest in each student over the course of several years. Staff and students often come to feel like family and stay in touch long after graduation.
  • Puentes, or “Bridges” program, works with all 12th-grade students to navigate post-graduation options, including applying to colleges and vocational schools and securing financial aid. Through this program, many of our students become the first in their families to pursue post-secondary education.
  • Later start time (8:45 a.m.): Many studies show that high school students learn best at a later time than is most commonly practiced. By starting later, our students are able to rest well and absorb information better.
  • Low student fees: Thanks to the generosity of donors, scholarships are awarded to each student, and remaining fees are only $250/year. This includes hot daily breakfast and lunch, uniforms, and a top-notch, private school education at a fraction of the cost of most private schools.

La Academia encourages and cultivates:

  • Curiosity
  • Social Justice
  • Cultural Identity
